Camping in the woods for a weekend.?

Sunday, 7. March 2010

What would be some good things to have while camping deep in the woods? I am not pitching a tent. I have built my own shelter with a fire pit inside. I plan on hunting for food as well. So what would be some great tools to have while Im on this trip?
The shelter I have built is all wood. Its pretty much a hut made of lots of dead branches, twigs, some boulders on the out side and a little bit of hay.

So let’s see. The necessities; shelter, warmth, food, water, & security.

Shelter you’ve mentioned a debris hut… check.

Warmth; matches, flint, striker, etc… to start a fire. Sleeping bag rated to 10 deg F below whatever the coolest night you expect to be in.

Food; you mention hunting. So it depends where you are as to what is legal to hunt with; shotgun, rifle, handgun, or bow for whatever game is in season. If it’s trap season perhaps some line for snares. Or fishing line and hooks if you’re near a water source.

Water; a container to gather water, either a filter or additive to make it safer to drink, or have a container that you can boil the water in.

I’d also suggest a large heavy blade for chopping/cutting (machete, axe, saw), a good first aid kit and cell phone for accidents/mistakes, some cordage of one kind or another to help build your shelter, really good all weather gear (waterproof outer shell, with insulating layers), and good water proof boots and good socks.

I’m hoping that this is just a mental exercise and you’re not thinking of doing this alone without proper experience or equipment. I know some of these TV shows make it look fun and easy but for those who aren’t experienced the woods can be a very dangerous place. And I’m someone who gets the call to come in and find people when they get into trouble.

Is it legal to have a bonfire on the beach?

Saturday, 6. March 2010

I’m planning a bonfire at the beach (in Florida). Would it be allowed if I had a raised fire pit or something???

It depends on the towns ordinance.

Are there fire pits on any beach in Florida?

Monday, 1. March 2010

Hello,
I’m planning on getting a bunch of friends down to the beach in a couple weeks and would love to have it from later in the afternoon into the evening, possibly around 10-11pm. I wanted to have a bonfire, but after doing some research found it to be illegal in FL.

When I was living in Southern CA we used to do this, and they had fire pits located on the beach where you could BBQ or what have you. I would be perfectly happy with a fire/BBQ pit instead of a bonfire, but do such things exist in FL?

Specifically I’d like the beach to be anywhere from the Daytona Beach area to Melbourne as the large majority of us live in Orlando. Alcohol use would be nice, but isn’t required. I don’t mind paying a few bucks for this to be at some sort of campground, so long as the fire area is on the beach itself (i.e. not in some pavilion).

Thanks
Adam Lawton

god no, you can’t do anything legally here

Can hardibacker board withstand firepit heat?

Sunday, 28. February 2010

Plan to buy an octagon fire pit kit, and fasten hardibacker, then thinset then typical fireplace stone. The interior of the firepit will be steel, so no direct flame on the cement board. Can the cement board and adhesion of the stone handle the heat with typical thinset, or is there some other product(s) I should consider?

How thick is the stone? How far from the fire will the wall be? Are you burning wood or something else? There are several products that people call handibacker, which one are you talking about? There is one that is pressed board and I wouldn’t use that, I would use one made out of cement. You also called it cement board, so I think you are on to the right stuff.

Are there any restrictions on outdoor fires in North Vancouver, BC, Canada?

Saturday, 27. February 2010

I am planning to buy a chiminea or fire pit for my back yard and was wondering if there are any restrictions on outdoor fires in BC, Canada? I have searched for restrictions, but can not find anything online? Maybe each city or district has their own regulations?

Banned in 1963: http://www.vancouverhistory.ca/chronology1963.htm Does this still hold? I think not as many pages point to trying to reduce smoke from backyard fires (eg. http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/air/particulates/agttobsc.html )

Fire Pits at La Jolla Shores?

Saturday, 27. February 2010

I was planning on going to La Jolla soon with my friends for a day at the beach. we wanted to get a fire pit so we could have a bonfire kind of party.
I know that it’s hard to get fire pits there because it’s usually very crowded.
How early do you have to arrive to ensure that you get a fire pit?

Strange as it may seem – yes, we got a firepit last summer by getting there at 7 am. We had 3 groups of friends who sat by the firepit in 2 hour shifts until the party started at 2 pm. It was worth it but i’d only do it for someone who I really care for.

What are some good snacks to serve?
We are having regular pizza like the usual. & planning to make smores. There will be soda & hot chocolate. What else are good snacks to have ?

Have a chocolate fountain
or a snow cone machine or popcorn machine
Rock band is fun the ACDC one just game out for Wii and it is awesome!!!

Have a great party this game might work to if you like to split people into teams, have one cool prize, a printer and someone to video tape you so that you can watch it later

You may want to have a look here: www.chase-games.com

This site describes an Amazing Race party plan that is great for a birthday party, sleepovers, scavenger hunt, etc and is designed for kids aged 13 – 18. The “legs” of the Amazing Race party plan sell on eBay quite cheap (like $5). Good Luck!

What issue of Maxim had plans to build a brick bbq?

Wednesday, 24. February 2010

Does anyone know what issue of Maxim (it was either last summer or summer 2007) has the plans for building your own brick bbq/fire pit? I really wanted to build one and my girlfriend trashed all my old maxim mags! So if anyone knows what issue had the directions in it, I could back order it…

THANKS!

Man I wish I knew… but you can probably get plans online. or if you’re really dedicated to having maxim’s fire pit, go on amazon or ebay and buy last summer’s and summer 2007’s issues.

Is it Illegal to burn without a fire pit?

Tuesday, 23. February 2010

Okay this summer I plan to have a big bunch of parties. My back yard in more than100 feet wide and 200 feet long. I have a in ground pool and deck so it’s probably only 150 long. I want to have some bomb fires do I have to have a fire pit to do that?

some places have stupid laws made up by silly dip sticks just trying to make things harder on everybody. So you should check with your state guidelines and see where you fall.
